Day 2 at Sinister Creature Con June 2022

Model: Lena Uhouse

For day 2 at SCC I really wanted to push myself and design a costume. It was incredibly ambitious and the concept was admittedly a little impractical. Unfortunately her prosthetics didn’t arrive in time so I had to wing it a little, something I’ve become a pro at. The result I think was a really fun and whimsical look. I was inspired by the rose people from Alice in Wonderland. I wanted to make something that was a little edgy, slightly spooky but fun to look at.

The costume took about a month of test fittings, giggles, stabbing my fingers repeatedly, spilling red dye all over my kitchen floor and swearing. There was lots of swearing, sorry grandma. I’m so thankful to my model for trusting me the entire time, her words of encouragement and bringing me caffeine. I know how insane I sounded when I confidently announced I was going to incorporate chicken wire. I cut my hands more than I would like to admit trying to force the wire into a shape that eventually looked somewhat regal and was safe enough to wear. I also want to thank my partner, Shai, for sewing the roses onto the chicken wire while I spent 10+ hours hand stitching seed beads into the collar of the dress to look like blood the night before the convention. This truly was a team effort and worth every moment just to watch how it swayed beautifully around the convention center.
